Winter Ritual
Leave it behind
1) CURRENT CLIMATE
The current climate is lack.
The marching order of our windswept kingdom is more.
For most of history, genuine need pervaded the world. Hunger, cold, and thirst were the melodies of the day.
Now our plagues are those of skin-deep excess, but a famine of the spirit.
Our society struggles with gluttony of the stomach, but starvation of the soul.
2) A SPELL CAST
Lack is the magic that pushes the wheels of our engorged world. Pushes us to buy and work and buy and work.
But it's a spell cast by the pushers of lack to feed their treacherous hunger.
The blood of the gospel of more is money, which works its magic on us.
And all that money funnels perfectly into cultivating weapons to defend the wanting and the having.
What we need now is not a filling of lack but a release of want—a magic of winter.
3) WINTER RITUAL
Acquire air-hardening modeling clay.
Think about something you want that you’d like to stop wanting. Wanting it hurts you.
Sculpt the clay into what you want. You can work metaphorically or symbolically here. All that matters is that when you look at the sculpture, you think of what you want.
Once you’ve transformed the clay into an image of what you want, let it dry and harden.
Place it somewhere central in your house. Every morning for 10 days, pray and beg this totem for what you want—the more desperate, the better. Express all your wanting.
On the morning of the 10th day, march your totem to a secluded area, leave it at the base of a tree, walk away, and forget it there. Leave it behind.
Warmly,
Lucas
