Drop the branch
Things are changing
Things are changing.
I recently had a conversation with my good friend and mentor.
He speaks to birds and knows the future by seeing the present.
He’s E, I’m L.
Here’s the conversation:
L:
My 9-year relationship recently ended.
We had the final conversation sitting in a diner. Outside the window were dozens of sparrows hopping around.
The next morning, there was a dead sparrow sitting outside our front door.
I packed my car with all my worldly belongings and drove across the county.
I bought a one-way ticket to France.
I leave next week.
The wooden snake has shed its skin.
~
I dreamed of a flock of white birds flying overhead, all carrying eucalyptus branches still covered in leaves.
One dropped its branch right at my feet.
I grinned ear to ear, then looked to you.
You nodded and smiled back at me as if to say, “Yes!”
E:
It’s hard to argue with a dead sparrow, or with Paris, for that matter.
Somewhere, on some scale, the little bird and the City of Lights balance each other out, just as every loss is counterbalanced by the promise it awakens.
Life, too, is a one-way ticket.
L:
Today I saw a pigeon carrying a twig flutter up into an orange tree.
What’s dropped has been whittled and recovered, lightened with loss, returned to ready sweetness.
Warmly,
Lucas
P.S.
To make changes and return to ready sweetness, begin here.
See you next week. We’ll be untangling fear. 🕊️
